Who we are and what we do

The National Breast Cancer Education Foundation has launched an innovative program that bridges the information and educational gap for newly diagnosed breast cancer patients. Our Komen Bags of Hope offer a wide variety of educational materials and comfort items to help patients and their surgeons from the diagnosis of breast cancer to completion of treatment. This program is the cornerstone of our operation, and our ultimate goal is to consistently provide our service to all newly diagnosed breast cancer patients in the United States.

We believe that a breast cancer program must address a patient's emotional, psychological and educational needs, as well as her physical needs. A patient who is empowered with information about her disease and treatment options and is well supported emotionally is in the best position to be an effective partner in her health care treatment. NBCEF bridges the information gap with the Komen Bag of Hope.

A staggering 2000 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in 2007 in San Diego County alone, according to estimates and statistics compiled by the California Cancer Registry. In most cases, these women will leave the doctor’s office after receiving the diagnosis feeling terrified, isolated, and powerless. Many of them are also low income, uninsured, minority or underinsured, which of course adds to their anxiety.

The San Diego County Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen For The Cure and the National Breast Cancer Education Foundation have joined forces to help these women get the essential tools they need for their journey through the breast cancer experience.  While our focus is currently San Diego, we plan to broaden our reach in 2008.

The Komen Bag of Hope is donated to and distributed by the physicians and surgeons who make the initial diagnosis. Fund-raising for this project is ongoing. Volunteers, donations, and suggestions are always appreciated and can be made by contacting our office at the National Breast Cancer Foundation 619.825.9670 or by email info@nbcef.org.
